Ever Hopeful

As an educator nearly reaching the milestone of 10 years in the game I have had my highs and lows. I have seen promise and despair and have gone through the endless roller coaster more times than I can imagine.

I started with hope for technology in education when I graduated from the University of Alberta, then I entered reality. The underfunded always hopeful public education system, where in many rooms current technology is a 30 year old overhead projector (Don’t laugh, I just got upgraded to a new projector this year but still have my 1950’s green and black chalk boards). However the walls (and budgets) that held back progress are seeming to crack at the edges just a bit, and light is coming through the sides.

The light I am talking about is the hope for technology in education, and the role it will play in the coming years. Many of our students are actively engaging in the use of various technologies with no direction, lead by educators who can’t read the map. This is why I am eagerly anticipating the new Connectivism and Collective Knowledge course, the future is collaboration and for an only child with control issues I hope this class helps…
